FARMWORKERS

Farmworkers are the heart of our San Mateo Coastline community. ALAS works closely with farms to understand their needs and provide essential services, from health care and housing to cultural experiences. Through partnerships with donors, organizations and public institutions, we ensure farmworkers and their families are supported, valued, and no longer invisible.
IMPROVING ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES

Farmworkers deserve care that supports their well-being. Through our Equity Bus, onsite visits, and expert guidance navigating clinics and insurance, we connect them to vital medical and mental health services. From transportation and translation to pharmacy visits and follow-ups, we stand with them every step of the way. Trust is the foundation of our work.
VISIBILITY & VOICE IN OUR COMUNITY

We’re bringing our farmworkers out of isolation and into the community. Through programs that encourage participation in community events and cultural celebrations, we help build confidence and connection—fueling the courage to join affordable housing marches and to speak up against injustices. Farmworkers proudly wear our hoodies, feeling part of something bigger. Together, we’re creating a community where every voice matters, and no one stands alone.
FARMWORKER FRIDAYS

Farmworker Fridays began during COVID to support essential workers who were overlooked and unprotected. Each week, we bring food, supplies, and joy to the fields– centered on the idea that food unites. These gatherings bring the community into the fields, creating space to connect, hear farmworkers’ stories, and understand the labor behind the food we eat. Often isolated and unseen, farmworkers take pride in welcoming others into the fields. The goal is simple: building a community where farmworkers are valued and visible.
NUTRITION: CLEAN WATER AND HEALTHY FOOD

Everyone deserves clean water and nourishing food. In partnership with Second Harvest, we bring fresh produce, rice, milk, and tortillas straight to the farms, making access simple and direct. To celebrate culture and health, we now offer Spanish-language cooking classes featuring familiar and meaningful dishes. Our mission is clear: to ensure farmworkers and their families thrive with nutritious, high-quality food that supports their well-being.
ACCORDION PROGRAM

Born from the need to heal after the pain of the mass shooting, the Accordion Program uses the power of music to reconnect farmworkers with their culture, families, and sense of home. Partnering with world-class musicians, we offer accordion and guitar classes, creating a space for expression, learning, and connection. Music is medicine—a proven force to help the heart heal and nurture the spirit. This one-of-a-kind program brings joy and renewal to our farmworker community.
LA MESA – FARM TO TABLE ADVOCACY

Imagine a table where everyone has a seat—farmworkers, growers, policymakers, local leaders, advocates, donors—coming together to share a meal and meaningful conversation. La Mesa is a powerful strategy that builds cross-sector relationships to transform outdated systems and narratives. Partnering with local chefs and grassroots leaders, we create spaces for dialogue that drive lasting, systemic change—reimagining the industry to uplift our community.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING – 555 KELLY

Through tireless advocacy, we’ve secured the historic construction of a 40-unit affordable housing community for elderly farmworkers in downtown Half Moon Bay. 555 Kelly will include ALAS’s Farmworker Resource Center, a world-class kitchen, and easy access to churches, cultural programs, and stores. In partnership with Mercy Housing, this project will serve as a national model, ensuring elderly farmworkers can retire with dignity and care.
CULTURAL EXPERIENCES ON THE EQUITY EXPRESS BUS

The Equity Express bus creates transformative experiences for farmworkers and their families. From learning about crabbing and fishing at the San Francisco pier to attending cultural events across the Bay Area, these outings spark joy, connection, and discovery. Through music, nature, and shared experiences, we deepen our ties to the land and the wider community. With the support of our team and volunteers, farmworkers and their families find a sense of home and belonging in the Bay Area.
HOODIES FOR FARMWORKERS

With this program, ALAS provides farmworkers with warm clothes, as they often have to face tough weather conditions while working in the fields. The program evolves depending on the farmworkers’ requests, that is why we have also delivered sleeping bags and blankets. You can buy an ALAS hoodie and donate one, please contact us to make an order.
