Half Moon Bay voters to decide farmworker housing project

The Half Moon Bay City Council on Tuesday approved a measure allowing the construction of an affordable housing complex for farmworkers.

The five-story development, which would be built on Kelly Avenue, would include 40 units of affordable supportive housing for retired and older local farmworkers.

Opponents, who argue the project is too tall, collected enough signatures to force the City Council to place the measure before voters.

The measure will appear on the November ballot and requires a simple majority to pass.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state leaders have criticized the city over how long it has taken to approve the project.
