CULTURAL ARTS

Our cultural arts programs are ALAS' heart.
We believe that coming together to celebrate our identities and our beautiful cultura is a powerful tool for collective healing and engagement.
Through participating in our different programs, the youth and families who are the holders of our cultural wealth have become visible actors in our community.
CULTURAL COMMUNITY EVENTS

We work together with the Half Moon Bay City Department to highlight and celebrate the special dates in our rich culture, such as Día de Los Muertos or Día del Niño. Our youth perform in these celebrations as an act of affirmation and pride. Check out our upcoming events.
BALLET FOLKLÓRICO TONANTZIN

Our Cultural Arts programs, such as the Ballet Folklórico Tonantzin, help our children connect with their parents’ culture and traditions. In the ballet, they learn music and dances from Mexico and other parts of Latin America.
MARIACHI MEDIA LUNA

With the Mariachi Media Luna program, our children learn the traditional Mexican music genres, as well as other more contemporary. They can test out different instruments, such as vihuela, guitarra, trompeta, and violín, to find which one they like to play. All members of our cultural programs offer two recitals each year. DRUMMING AND SINGING

With this online program, our children can learn how to play the cajón in more in-depth sessions. It’s coordinated with the singing program so that students can try out different ways to make music. These are shorter, temporary, and more flexible programs. CLICK HERE FOR UPCOMING EVENTS
SEWING

Our adult sewing program is a great place for our community members to learn a new creative skill. Moreover, once a month, the program participants organize a fleamarket in which they sell their unique handmade pieces to contribute to ALAS’ funds for families in our community.
SUMMER PROGRAMS

ALAS’ summer program consist of four weeks of activities such as art crafts, dance, and music in a more relaxed atmosphere. The goal is to involve our children and their families too, and therefore provide a communal space for creative expression and engagement. We want to support our Half Moon Bay neighbors who might not have enough resources and provide their children with an accessible and meaningful summer experience.
FASHION DESIGN

Our online fashion design program for high school students offers a fun and educational opportunity to our youth. Its goal is to take students out of their academic comfort zone and make them learn a new skill while providing a creative and inspiring environment.
